About the Role

The Risk AI/ML team at Coinbase is dedicated to creating the most trusted and user-friendly platform in the crypto space. We develop advanced, scalable, and blockchain-aware ML systems to safeguard our customers against fraud, account takeovers (ATO), and scams. Our contributions are vital for the business, enabling features such as instant withdrawals, guest checkout, and alternative payment methods.

We are seeking an experienced AI/ML leader to oversee and expand our Risk AI/ML organization. In this impactful role, you will shape the strategic vision, lead multiple teams of managers and engineers, and own the complete ML systems that tackle risk across Coinbase. This position requires collaboration with senior leaders in product, engineering, and operations to protect our users and business.

Your Responsibilities

• Lead and Grow: Manage and enhance the Risk AI/ML organization, promoting a culture of excellence and rapid execution.
• Define Strategic Vision: Develop and implement a multi-year roadmap for Risk AI/ML, identifying new threats and opportunities within the crypto ecosystem.
• Manage Through Others: Mentor ML managers and senior technical leads, fostering career progression and increasing their impact.
• Drive Execution: Guide a 25+ person organization to design, build, and deploy sophisticated risk models that directly impact business objectives.
• Own the System: Take full accountability for the end-to-end ML systems for Risk, overseeing everything from feature engineering and model development to live production monitoring.
• Senior Stakeholder Management: Act as the primary AI/ML representative for the Risk domain, collaborating with VPs and Directors in Product, Engineering, and Operations to translate complex business challenges into actionable ML roadmaps.
• Hire and Develop Talent: Partner with our talent organization to attract, recruit, and maintain top ML managers and engineers.

What We Value in You (Must-Have Qualifications)

• Extensive Management Experience: Over 10 years in machine learning, with at least 5 years in a management role and 2 years managing other managers.
• Risk Domain Expertise: Strong background in the Risk, Fraud, or Trust & Safety spaces, with a proven track record of developing ML systems to address adversarial behavior.
• Strategic Leadership: History of establishing multi-quarter strategic roadmaps for ML teams and engaging with senior partners to achieve business outcomes.
• Technical Credibility: Solid technical foundation in modern machine learning techniques and platforms, including supervised/unsupervised learning and MLOps.
• Team Building: Proven success in recruiting and nurturing top-performing ML leaders and engineers.
• Execution Mindset: Strong focus on execution with the ability to navigate ambiguity and lead large teams towards tangible outcomes.
• Effective Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical topics to diverse audiences.

Compensation Transparency Notice: Depending on your work location, the target annual base salary for this position ranges from $262,650 to $309,000 USD. Coinbase offers additional compensation through equity and bonuses, along with comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
